What is Family Planning?

It is the planning of when to have children, the use of birth control, and other techniques to implement such plans. It is most usually applied to a female-male couple who wish to limit the number of children they have and/or to control the timing of pregnancy (also known as spacing children). Family planning may encompass sterilization, as well as abortion. Birth control is the techniques used to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

The promotion of family planning in countries with high birth rates has the potential to reduce poverty and hunger and reduce maternal deaths and childhood deaths. In the past 40 years, family-planning programs have played a major part in raising the prevalence of contraceptive practice from less than 10% to 60% and reducing fertility in developing countries from six to about three births per woman.

What is Abortion?

Abortion is the termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to viability. The term abortion most commonly refers to the induced abortion of a human pregnancy. Abortion, when induced in the developed world in accordance with local law, is among the safest procedures in medicine. Contemporary medicine utilizes medications and surgical procedures to induce abortion. The legality, prevalence, the cultural and religious status of abortion vary substantially around the world.
